Convert Pascals to Decibars
1 pascal (Pa) equals 0.0001 decibars (dbar).
1 Pa = 0.0001 dbar
Type in either box. Scientific notation works: 1.5e-3.

How to Convert Pascal to Decibar
- 1 Pa = 0.0001 dbar
- 1 dbar = 10000 Pa
- Example: convert 15 Pa to dbar: 15 Pa = 15 × 0.0001 dbar = 0.0015 dbar
Formula
dbar = Pa ÷ 10000
Derivation from SI units:
- 1 Pa = 1 N/m² = 1 kg·m⁻¹·s⁻²
- 1 dbar = 10⁻¹ bar = 10⁴ Pa
Both units are defined exactly, so the factor is exact. Pascal definition: pascal; Decibar definition: decibar.
Worked examples
- A reading of 125 Pa converts to 0.0125 dbar.
125 Pa × 0.0001 = 0.0125 dbar - A value of 1000 Pa is 0.1 dbar.
1000 Pa × 0.0001 = 0.1 dbar

Where it's used
Pascals are used for cleanroom and isolator pressure differentials (typically 10–50 Pa), while decibars appear in oceanography: CTD instruments report sea pressure in dbar. Both measure pressure, stress and differential pressure (force per unit area), so the conversion is a fixed factor.

Frequently asked questions
How many decibars are in 1 pascal?
1 Pa = 0.0001 dbar.
How do I convert pascals to decibars?
Multiply the value in Pa by 0.0001, or divide it by 10000. For example, 15 Pa × 0.0001 = 0.0015 dbar.
Is the Pa to dbar conversion exact?
Yes. Both units are defined exactly, and 1 Pa is exactly 0.0001 dbar.
