Temperature Converter
Temperature Converter: convert between 4 temperature units, for example 1 °C = 33.8 °F.
| Unit | Value |
|---|---|
| degree Celsius (°C) | 1 °C |
| degree Celsius to degree Fahrenheit | 33.8 °F |
| degree Celsius to kelvin | 274.15 K |
| degree Celsius to degree Rankine | 493.47 °R |
Convert between Celsius, Fahrenheit, kelvin and Rankine. Temperature scales have different zero points, so conversions use an offset as well as a factor: °F = °C × 1.8 + 32 and K = °C + 273.15.
Temperature vs temperature difference
A temperature reading (20 °C) converts with the offset: 20 °C = 68 °F. A temperature difference or rise (a change of 20 °C) converts with the factor only: 20 °C of change = 36 °F of change. Mixing the two is the most common temperature-conversion error in engineering.
Absolute scales
Kelvin and Rankine start at absolute zero (0 K = 0 °R = −273.15 °C = −459.67 °F). Gas laws such as PV = nRT need absolute temperature; Celsius or Fahrenheit values give wrong answers.
Temperature unit definitions
- degree Celsius (°C)
- The degree Celsius (°C) is the SI unit for Celsius temperature, defined by t(°C) = T(K) − 273.15. A temperature difference of 1 °C is exactly 1 K.
- degree Fahrenheit (°F)
- The degree Fahrenheit (°F) is a temperature scale on which water freezes at 32 °F and boils at 212 °F at standard pressure. One Fahrenheit degree is exactly 5/9 of a kelvin.
- kelvin (K)
- The kelvin (K) is the SI base unit of thermodynamic temperature. Zero kelvin is absolute zero; it is written without a degree sign.
- degree Rankine (°R)
- The degree Rankine (°R) is an absolute temperature scale with Fahrenheit-sized degrees: 0 °R is absolute zero and water freezes at 491.67 °R.
