Convert between watts, kilowatts, megawatts, horsepower, metric horsepower (PS), BTU per hour, tons of refrigeration, kilocalories per hour and foot-pounds per second.
Mechanical vs metric horsepower
The mechanical horsepower (hp) is 550 ft·lbf/s ≈ 745.7 W. The metric horsepower (PS, CV, ch) is 75 kgf·m/s = 735.49875 W, about 1.4 % smaller. European car specifications in PS are therefore slightly lower in hp.
Cooling capacity units
Air-conditioners are rated in BTU/h, tons of refrigeration (1 TR = 12 000 BTU/h ≈ 3.517 kW) or kW. A "12 000 BTU" unit is a 1-ton, 3.5 kW unit.
Power unit definitions
- watt (W)
- The watt (W) is the SI unit of power: one joule per second.
- milliwatt (mW)
- The milliwatt (mW) is one thousandth of a watt.
- kilowatt (kW)
- The kilowatt (kW) is 1000 watts. Car engines, motors and heat pumps are rated in kW in most of the world.
- megawatt (MW)
- The megawatt (MW) is one million watts.
- horsepower (hp)
- The mechanical horsepower (hp) is 550 foot-pounds per second, about 745.7 W. It is the horsepower used for US engines and motors. Reference: Mechanical (imperial) horsepower, 550 ft·lbf/s. Metric horsepower (PS) is about 1.4 % smaller.
- metric horsepower (PS)
- The metric horsepower (PS, CV, ch) is 75 kilogram-force metres per second, exactly 735.49875 W, about 1.4 % less than a mechanical horsepower.
- BTU per hour (BTU/h)
- The BTU per hour (BTU/h, often written BTU) is the US unit for heating and cooling capacity, about 0.293 W. 3412 BTU/h is about 1 kW.
- ton of refrigeration (TR)
- The ton of refrigeration (TR) is 12 000 BTU/h, about 3.517 kW: the cooling from melting one short ton of ice in 24 hours.
- kilocalorie per hour (kcal/h)
- The kilocalorie per hour (kcal/h) is a heating and cooling power unit used in parts of Europe and Asia. With the International Table calorie it is exactly 1.163 W. Reference: Uses the International Table kilocalorie (4186.8 J), the convention in heating and HVAC: 1 kcal/h = 1.163 W.
- foot-pound per second (ft·lbf/s)
- The foot-pound per second is the US mechanical power unit from which the horsepower (550 ft·lbf/s) is defined.
