Corrosion Rate Converter
Corrosion Rate Converter: convert between 4 corrosion rate units, for example 1 mpy = 0.0254 mm/y.
| Unit | Value |
|---|---|
| mil per year to millimetre per year | 0.0254 mm/y |
| mil per year to micrometre per year | 25.4 µm/y |
| mil per year (mpy) | 1 mpy |
| mil per year to inch per year | 0.001 ipy |
Convert corrosion rates between mils per year (mpy), millimetres per year (mm/y), micrometres per year (µm/y) and inches per year (ipy). 1 mpy = 0.0254 mm/y exactly.
Weight loss units need density
Rates given as mass loss, such as mg/(dm²·day) (mdd) or g/(m²·day), cannot be converted to mm/y without the metal density. Use the ASTM G1 relation: rate = K × W ÷ (A × T × D).
Corrosion Rate unit definitions
- millimetre per year (mm/y)
- The millimetre per year (mm/y, also mm/a) is the most common metric unit of corrosion rate: the average loss of metal thickness per year.
- mil per year (mpy)
- The mil per year (mpy) is the US unit of corrosion rate: one thousandth of an inch of thickness lost per year, exactly 0.0254 mm/y. Below about 1 mpy corrosion is usually considered low.
- micrometre per year (µm/y)
- The micrometre per year is 0.001 mm/y, used for slow corrosion such as atmospheric corrosion of zinc and steel (ISO 9223 corrosivity categories).
- inch per year (ipy)
- The inch per year (ipy) is 1000 mpy, or 25.4 mm/y. It appears in older corrosion tables and handbooks.
