    Pitot Tube Calculator

    A pitot-static tube reading 1000 Pa of dynamic pressure in sea-level air means an airspeed of 40.4061 m/s.

    Flow:

    Air 1.4; hot combustion gases about 1.3; helium 1.667.

    Enter a valid number for “Dynamic pressure p₀ − p”.

    Pitot Tube Formula

    V = √(2(p₀ − p)/ρ)

    subsonic M = √((2/(γ−1))[(p₀/p)^((γ−1)/γ) − 1]); supersonic: Rayleigh formula p₀₂/p₁(M₁)

    Worked Example

    A low-speed pitot reading 1000 Pa dynamic pressure in sea-level air:

    1. V = √(2(p₀ − p) ÷ ρ) = √(2 × 1000 ÷ 1.225)
    2. V = 40.40610178 m/s

    In knots: 78.54317841 kn

    GATE tip

    With a U-tube manometer, Δp = ρ_liquid g h. A 10 cm water column is 980.7 Pa, which gives about 40 m/s in sea-level air.

    Frequently asked questions

    Why a different formula above Mach 1?

    A normal shock forms ahead of the probe, so it measures the stagnation pressure behind the shock. The Rayleigh pitot formula relates that to the free-stream Mach number.

    When is the incompressible formula good enough?

    Below about Mach 0.3; at Mach 0.5 it overestimates the speed by about 3 %.
