DFT Calculator
The 4-point DFT of {1, 2, 3, 4} starts with X[0] = 10, then −2 + j2, −2 and −2 − j2.
Up to 64 samples, e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4.

| 2 | -2 + j0 | 2 | 180 |
| 3 | -2 − j2 | 2.8284271 | -135 |
Step-by-step solution
- X[k] = Σₙ x[n] e^(−j2πkn/4), k = 0 … 3
- X[0] = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10
- For N = 4 the twiddle factors are 1, −j, −1, j
DFT Formula
X[k] = Σ x[n] e^(−j2πkn/N)
k = 0 … N − 1; X[0] is the sum of the samples
Worked Example
The 4-point sequence x[n] = {1, 2, 3, 4}:
- X[k] = Σₙ x[n] e^(−j2πkn/4), k = 0 … 3
- X[0] = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10
- For N = 4 the twiddle factors are 1, −j, −1, j
Energy Σ|x[n]|²: 30 · Parseval check Σ|X[k]|²/N: 30
| k | X[k] | |X[k]| | Phase (°) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 10 + j0 | 10 | 0 |
| 1 | -2 + j2 | 2.8284271 | 135 |
| 2 | -2 + j0 | 2 | 180 |
| 3 | -2 − j2 | 2.8284271 | -135 |
GATE tip
For N = 4 the twiddle factors are 1, −j, −1, j, so X[1] = x₀ − jx₁ − x₂ + jx₃. Writing the 4 × 4 DFT matrix once saves time on every 4-point question.

Sampling Theorem Calculator
fₛ ≥ 2f_max
alias frequency f_a = |f − k fₛ| with k the nearest integer to f/fₛ
Example: A 4 kHz signal sampled at 6 kHz, and a 5 kHz tone in the same system: Nyquist rate 2f_max = 8 kHz.

Convolution Calculator
y[n] = Σₖ x[k] h[n − k]
length of linear convolution = L_x + L_h − 1; circular wraps modulo N
Example: x[n] = {1, 2, 3} through h[n] = {1, 1, 1}: Linear convolution y[n] = {1, 3, 6, 5, 3}.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check a DFT by hand?
X[0] is the sum of the samples, X[N/2] is the alternating sum, and for real x[n] X[N − k] is the conjugate of X[k].
Is the FFT different?
No: the FFT is a fast algorithm for the same DFT, needing about N log₂ N operations instead of N².
