Convert frequency and rotational speed between Hz, kHz, MHz, GHz, rpm, revolutions per second, rad/s, degrees per second and bpm. 60 rpm = 1 Hz and 1 Hz = 2π rad/s exactly.

    Frequency and angular velocity

A shaft turning once per second has a frequency of 1 Hz (1 rev/s, 60 rpm) and an angular velocity ω = 2π rad/s. Physics and power formulas such as P = Tω and v = ωr need rad/s; motor nameplates and tachometers give rpm.

    Motor speed from supply frequency

An AC induction motor’s synchronous speed is 120 × f ÷ poles in rpm: 1500 rpm for a 4-pole motor on 50 Hz, 1800 rpm on 60 Hz. The running speed is a few percent lower (slip), e.g. 1450 rpm.

    Frequency unit definitions

    hertz (Hz)
The hertz (Hz) is the SI unit of frequency: one cycle, oscillation or revolution per second. Mains electricity runs at 50 Hz or 60 Hz.
    megahertz (MHz)
A megahertz is one million hertz. FM radio uses 88–108 MHz, microcontrollers run at 8–200 MHz and RAM speeds are quoted in MHz (strictly MT/s).
    gigahertz (GHz)
A gigahertz is 10⁹ Hz. Processor clocks run at 2–6 GHz, Wi-Fi at 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz, and 5G and radar up to tens of GHz.
    revolution per minute (rpm)
Revolutions per minute (rpm) count full turns of a rotating shaft each minute. Dividing by 60 gives revolutions per second, numerically equal to hertz.
    kilohertz (kHz)
A kilohertz is 1000 Hz. Human hearing reaches about 20 kHz, audio is sampled at 44.1 or 48 kHz, and AM radio broadcasts at 531–1602 kHz.
    radian per second (rad/s)
The radian per second is the SI unit of angular velocity: a full turn is 2π radians, so 1 Hz of rotation equals 2π rad/s. Physics formulas such as v = ωr and P = Tω use rad/s.

    revolution per second (rps)
Revolutions per second count full turns each second; one revolution per second is a rotational frequency of 1 Hz.
    degree per second (°/s)
Degrees per second measure turning rate. A clock’s second hand turns at 6 °/s; gyroscope sensors are rated in °/s (dps).
    beat per minute (bpm)
Beats per minute count events per minute: heartbeats for pulse rate and beats for musical tempo. 60 bpm is exactly 1 Hz.
    terahertz (THz)
A terahertz is 10¹² Hz, between microwaves and infrared. Visible light spans about 400–750 THz and fibre-optic lasers near 1550 nm run at 193.4 THz.
