CO₂-Equivalent Calculator
Ten tonnes of non-fossil methane is 270 t CO₂e over 100 years, using the IPCC AR6 global warming potential of 27.
270 t CO₂e
- GWP-100 (IPCC AR6)
- 27
- In kg CO₂e
- 270000 kg
Step-by-step solution
- CO₂e = mass × GWP₁₀₀ = 10 t × 27 = 270 t CO₂e
CO₂-Equivalent Formula
CO₂e = mass × GWP₁₀₀
AR6 GWP-100: CH₄ 27.0 (non-fossil) or 29.8 (fossil), N₂O 273, SF₆ 25,200
Worked Example
10 tonnes of biogenic methane:
- CO₂e = mass × GWP₁₀₀ = 10 t × 27 = 270 t CO₂e
In kg CO₂e: 270000 kg
GATE tip
GWP compares warming over a time horizon. Over 20 years methane’s GWP is about 80, which is why short-term climate goals focus on methane cuts.

Frequently asked questions
Why are there two values for methane?
Fossil methane also adds the CO₂ it eventually oxidises to, which was not recently drawn from the air, so its GWP is higher (29.8 vs 27.0).
Why do older reports give 25 or 28 for methane?
Each IPCC assessment updates GWPs: AR4 used 25 and AR5 28. Inventories must state which set they use.
