    GPA Calculator

    GPA is the credit-weighted average of grade points: these five courses give an unweighted GPA of 3.556.

    Letter grade, then credits (1 if left out), then AP, IB or Honors for weighted GPA.

    Step-by-step solution
    1. GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits
    2. Unweighted: 16 ÷ 4.5 = 3.556
    3. Weighted (AP/IB +1, Honors +0.5): 17.5 ÷ 4.5 = 3.889

    GPA Formula

    GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits

    A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3 … F = 0; AP/IB +1, Honors +0.5 for weighted

    Worked Example

    Grades A (AP), A−, B+ (Honors), A (half credit) and B:

    1. GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits
    2. Unweighted: 16 ÷ 4.5 = 3.556
    3. Weighted (AP/IB +1, Honors +0.5): 17.5 ÷ 4.5 = 3.889

    Total credits: 4.5 · Quality points (unweighted): 16

    Scales vary by school

    This calculator uses the common 4.0 scale with A+ counted as 4.0. Some schools give A+ 4.3 or use different weighting; change the AP and Honors values above to match your school’s policy.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

    Unweighted GPA uses the 4.0 scale for every class; weighted GPA adds points for harder classes (commonly +1 for AP or IB and +0.5 for Honors), so it can exceed 4.0.

    Do colleges recalculate GPA?

    Many do, often using core academic courses only and their own weighting, so your school’s GPA and a college’s version can differ.
