    LED Resistor Calculator

    A 2 V LED at 20 mA from 5 V needs a resistor of 150 Ω, dissipating 60 mW.

    Red/yellow about 2 V, green 2.1–3.2 V, blue/white about 3 V.

    Series resistor R =

    150 Ω

    Next E24 value up
    150 Ω
    Current with that resistor
    20 mA
    Power in the resistor
    60 mW
    Resistor rating
    0.125 W is enough
    Step-by-step solution
    1. R = (V_s − n V_f) ÷ I = (5 − 1 × 2) ÷ 0.02 A
    2. R = 3 ÷ 0.02 = 150 Ω
    3. P = (V_s − nV_f) × I = 60 mW

    LED Resistor Formula

    R = (V_s − n V_f) / I_f

    n LEDs in series; resistor power P = (V_s − nV_f) I_f

    Worked Example

    One 2 V LED at 20 mA from a 5 V supply:

    1. R = (V_s − n V_f) ÷ I = (5 − 1 × 2) ÷ 0.02 A
    2. R = 3 ÷ 0.02 = 150 Ω
    3. P = (V_s − nV_f) × I = 60 mW

Current with that resistor: 20 mA · Power in the resistor: 60 mW · Resistor rating: 0.125 W is enough

    GATE tip

Diode questions in GATE use the same idea: replace each conducting diode with its forward drop (0.7 V for silicon), then apply Ohm’s and Kirchhoff’s laws to what remains.

    Frequently asked questions

Why choose the next value up?

A slightly larger resistor gives slightly less current, which is safe; a smaller one would overdrive the LED.

Can I put LEDs in parallel on one resistor?

Avoid it: small differences in V_f make one LED hog the current. Give each string its own resistor.
