Star-Delta Conversion Calculator
A delta of 30, 60 and 90 Ω converts to a star with R_a = 15 Ω, R_b = 10 Ω and R_c = 30 Ω.
15 Ω
- R_b
- 10 Ω
- R_c
- 30 Ω
Step-by-step solution
- ΣR = R_ab + R_bc + R_ca = 180 Ω
- R_a = R_ab R_ca ÷ ΣR = 30 × 90 ÷ 180 = 15 Ω
- R_b = R_ab R_bc ÷ ΣR = 10 Ω; R_c = R_bc R_ca ÷ ΣR = 30 Ω
Star-Delta Conversion Formula
R_a = R_ab R_ca / (R_ab + R_bc + R_ca)
star → delta: R_ab = (R_aR_b + R_bR_c + R_cR_a) / R_c
Worked Example
A delta of R_ab = 30 Ω, R_bc = 60 Ω and R_ca = 90 Ω:
- ΣR = R_ab + R_bc + R_ca = 180 Ω
- R_a = R_ab R_ca ÷ ΣR = 30 × 90 ÷ 180 = 15 Ω
- R_b = R_ab R_bc ÷ ΣR = 10 Ω; R_c = R_bc R_ca ÷ ΣR = 30 Ω
R_c: 30 Ω
GATE tip
Each star resistor is the product of the two delta resistors touching that node, divided by the sum of all three. Each delta resistor is the sum of pairwise star products divided by the opposite star resistor.

Frequently asked questions
When do I need a star-delta conversion?
When resistors form a bridge or triangle that is neither series nor parallel. Converting one Δ to Y usually turns the network into simple series-parallel parts.
What about balanced networks?
For three equal resistors, R_Y = R_Δ/3 and R_Δ = 3R_Y.
