Step-by-step solution
- Convert units: L = 100 mH = 0.1 H
- X_L = 2π × f × L
- X_L = 2π × 50 × 0.1
- X_L = 31.41592654 Ω
Inductive Reactance Formula
X_L = 2π f L
X_L reactance (Ω), f frequency (Hz), L inductance (H)
Worked Example
A 100 mH inductor on 50 Hz mains:
- Convert units: L = 100 mH = 0.1 H
- X_L = 2π × f × L
- X_L = 2π × 50 × 0.1
- X_L = 31.41592654 Ω

GATE tip
At resonance X_L = X_C, which gives f₀ = 1/(2π√LC) directly. If a question gives X_L and X_C at one frequency, the resonant frequency is f × √(X_C/X_L).

Frequently asked questions
Why does reactance rise with frequency?
An inductor opposes changes in current, and faster changes mean more opposition. It passes DC freely (X_L = 0) and blocks high frequencies.
Is reactance the same as resistance?
Both are in ohms, but reactance stores and returns energy without dissipating it, and shifts current 90° behind voltage.
