Linear Inequality Calculator
Solve an inequality like an equation, but flip the sign when you divide by a negative: −3x + 4 < 10 gives x > -2.
x > -2
- Interval notation
- (-2, ∞)
- Boundary (decimal)
- -2
Step-by-step solution
- −3x + 4 < 10
- Subtract 4: −3x < 6
- Divide by -3 (negative, so the sign flips): x > -2
Linear Inequality Formula
ax + b < c → x < (c − b)/a
the inequality sign reverses when dividing by a negative a
Worked Example
The inequality −3x + 4 < 10:
- −3x + 4 < 10
- Subtract 4: −3x < 6
- Divide by -3 (negative, so the sign flips): x > -2
Boundary (decimal): -2
Test-day tip
For word problems (“at most”, “at least”), write the inequality first, then check one value from the answer range in the original statement. On the SAT, graphing y = ax + b and y = c shows the solution as the x-values where one line is below the other.

Slope-Intercept Form Calculator
y = mx + b
m slope, b y-intercept = y₁ − m·x₁
Example: The line through (1, 2) and (4, 8): Slope-intercept form: y = 2x.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the inequality sign flip?
Multiplying or dividing both sides by a negative number reverses the order: 2 < 3, but −2 > −3.
What do brackets and parentheses mean in interval notation?
A bracket [ ] includes the endpoint (≤ or ≥); a parenthesis ( ) excludes it (< or >). Infinity always takes a parenthesis.
