Dilution Calculator
To make 1 L of 0.1 M from a 2 M stock, take 0.05 L (50 mL) of stock and add solvent to 1 L, from C₁V₁ = C₂V₂.
Any concentration unit works (%, mg/mL) as long as C₁ and C₂ use the same one.
0.05 L
- In mL
- 50 mL
- In µL
- 50000 µL
- In m³
- 0.00005 m³
- Solvent to add V₂ − V₁
- 0.95 L
- Dilution factor V₂/V₁
- 20
Step-by-step solution
- V₁ = C₂ × V₂ ÷ C₁
- V₁ = 0.1 × 1 ÷ 2
- V₁ = 0.05 L
Dilution Formula
C₁ V₁ = C₂ V₂
C₁ stock concentration, V₁ stock volume, C₂ final concentration, V₂ final volume
Worked Example
Making 1 L of 0.1 M solution from a 2 M stock:
- V₁ = C₂ × V₂ ÷ C₁
- V₁ = 0.1 × 1 ÷ 2
- V₁ = 0.05 L
In µL: 50000 µL · In m³: 0.00005 m³ · Solvent to add V₂ − V₁: 0.95 L · Dilution factor V₂/V₁: 20
Acid safety
When diluting concentrated acids, add acid to water, never water to acid: the heat released can boil the small amount of water and spatter acid.

Molar Mass Calculator
M = Σ nᵢ Aᵢ
nᵢ number of atoms of each element, Aᵢ its standard atomic weight (g/mol)
Example: Sulfuric acid, H2SO4: Molar mass M = 98.072 g/mol.
-
Moles Calculator
n = m / M
n amount (mol), m mass (g), M molar mass (g/mol); particles N = n × Nₐ
Example: 36.03 g of water (M = 18.015 g/mol): Amount of substance n = 2 mol.
-
Molarity Calculator
c = m / (M × V)
c molarity (mol/L), m mass of solute (g), M molar mass (g/mol), V volume of solution (L)
Example: 29.22 g of sodium chloride (M = 58.44 g/mol) made up to 1 litre: Molarity c = 0.5 mol/L (M).
Frequently asked questions
Can I use % or mg/mL?
Yes, as long as C₁ and C₂ are in the same unit: the formula is a ratio. Leave the unit choice as it is and read the volumes.
How do I make a serial dilution?
Repeat a fixed dilution: 1 mL into 9 mL is 1:10 each step, so three steps give 1:1000.
