    Taylor Tool Life Calculator

    Taylor’s equation links speed and tool life, VTⁿ = C: cutting at 100 m/min with n = 0.25 and C = 300 gives T = 81 min.

    Find:
    Tool life T =

    81 min

    Tool life
    1.35 h
    Step-by-step solution
    1. VTⁿ = C → T = (C/V)^(1/n)
    2. T = (300 ÷ 100)^(1/0.25) = 81 min

    Taylor Tool Life Formula

    V Tⁿ = C

    V cutting speed, T tool life, n exponent (≈ 0.1 HSS, 0.25 carbide), C constant

    Worked Example

    V = 100 m/min with n = 0.25 and C = 300:

    1. VTⁿ = C → T = (C/V)^(1/n)
    2. T = (300 ÷ 100)^(1/0.25) = 81 min

    Using the Taylor exponent

Because T = (C/V)^(1/n), tool life is very sensitive to speed: with n = 0.25 for carbide, a 10 % increase in speed cuts tool life by about 32 %. Typical exponents are about 0.1–0.15 for HSS, 0.2–0.3 for carbide and 0.4–0.6 for ceramics. In GATE problems, find n and C from two test points first, then use them for the new speed or life; check that both points use the same units of speed and time.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does tool life change if speed rises 20 %?

    T scales as V^(−1/n): with n = 0.25, life falls to 1.2⁻⁴ ≈ 48 % of its value.

What is C in Taylor’s equation?

The cutting speed that gives a tool life of 1 minute.
