    Step-by-step solution
    1. Vₘ = √2 × 230 = 325.2691193 V
    2. V_dc = (2Vₘ/π) cos α
    3. V_dc = 179.3302643 V at α = 30°

    Worked Example

    A single-phase full converter on 230 V with α = 30° and continuous current:

    1. Vₘ = √2 × 230 = 325.2691193 V
    2. V_dc = (2Vₘ/π) cos α
    3. V_dc = 179.3302643 V at α = 30°

    Overlap from source inductance reduces the output by 3ωL_sI_d/π (three-phase) or 2ωL_sI_d/π (single-phase). It is a frequent follow-up after the basic V_dc.

      V_dc = 2Vₘ/π (no filter), V_r ≈ I/(f_r C)

      f_r = f (half-wave) or 2f (full-wave); with a capacitor V_dc ≈ Vₘ − V_r/2

      Example: A bridge rectifier on 12 V RMS, 0.7 V diodes, 50 Hz, 0.5 A load and 2200 µF: DC output voltage = 14.4342 V.

    Frequently asked questions

    When does a full converter invert?

    For α > 90° with continuous current, V_dc is negative while the current stays positive, so power flows from the DC side back to the AC supply.

    Why does power factor fall with α?

    The current is delayed by α relative to the voltage, so the displacement factor is cos α. With harmonics, the full power factor is 0.9 cos α (1-φ) or 0.955 cos α (3-φ).
