4-20 mA Calculator
A 0–10 bar transmitter at 2.5 bar sends 8 mA: 25 % of the 16 mA span above the 4 mA live zero.
In any unit: bar, °C, m³/h, %.
8 mA
- Percent of span
- 25 %
- Voltage across a 250 Ω resistor
- 2 V
Step-by-step solution
- I = 4 + 16 × (PV − LRV) ÷ (URV − LRV)
- I = 4 + 16 × (2.5 − 0) ÷ 10 = 8 mA
4-20 mA Formula
I = 4 + 16 (PV − LRV)/(URV − LRV)
PV = LRV + (I − 4)/16 × (URV − LRV); 250 Ω converts 4–20 mA to 1–5 V
Worked Example
A 0–10 bar pressure transmitter reading 2.5 bar:
- I = 4 + 16 × (PV − LRV) ÷ (URV − LRV)
- I = 4 + 16 × (2.5 − 0) ÷ 10 = 8 mA
Voltage across a 250 Ω resistor: 2 V
GATE tip
Loop voltage budget: the supply must cover the transmitter’s minimum voltage plus 20 mA × (loop resistance). A 24 V supply with a 12 V transmitter allows 600 Ω of loop.

T in kelvin; inverse 1/T = 1/T₀ + ln(R/R₀)/B
Example: A 10 kΩ (at 25 °C) NTC thermistor with B = 3950 K at 0 °C: Resistance R = 33.6206 kΩ.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the range start at 4 mA, not 0?
The live zero distinguishes a true zero reading from a broken wire (0 mA) and lets two-wire transmitters draw their operating power from the loop.
What do readings below 4 mA mean?
Under NAMUR NE 43, below 3.8 mA or above 20.5 mA signals a sensor or wiring fault rather than a measurement.
