    Step-by-step solution
    1. Q = 2πKb(h₂ − h₁) ÷ ln(r₂/r₁) = 2π × 20 × 30 × 5 ÷ 7.60090246
    2. Q = 2479.91025 m³/day

    Well Yield Formula

    Confined: Q = 2πKb(h₂ − h₁)/ln(r₂/r₁)

    unconfined: Q = πK(h₂² − h₁²)/ln(r₂/r₁)

    Worked Example

    A confined aquifer, K = 20 m/day, 30 m thick, with heads 40 m at the 0.15 m well and 45 m at 300 m:

    1. Q = 2πKb(h₂ − h₁) ÷ ln(r₂/r₁) = 2π × 20 × 30 × 5 ÷ 7.60090246
    2. Q = 2479.91025 m³/day

    Transmissivity T = Kb: 600 m²/day · Drawdown between the points: 5 m

    GATE tip

With drawdowns s₁, s₂ at two observation wells in a confined aquifer, Q = 2πT(s₁ − s₂)/ln(r₂/r₁). Use this to back out T from a pumping test.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the radius of influence?

The distance beyond which pumping no longer lowers the water table measurably. It appears inside a logarithm, so rough estimates still give reasonable yields.

Why do unconfined aquifers use h²?

The saturated thickness itself falls near the well, so the flow area shrinks; integrating gives the h² difference.
