Step-by-step solution
- L = μ₀μᵣN²A ÷ l = 0.000001256637062 × 1 × 200² × 0.0003141592654 m² ÷ 0.1 m
- L = 0.0001579136705 H = 157.9136705 µH
Inductance Formula
L = μ₀μᵣN²A / l
toroid: l = 2πR (mean radius); coax: L/length = (μ₀/2π) ln(b/a)
Worked Example
A 200-turn air-cored solenoid, 20 mm in diameter and 100 mm long:
- L = μ₀μᵣN²A ÷ l = 0.000001256637062 × 1 × 200² × 0.0003141592654 m² ÷ 0.1 m
- L = 0.0001579136705 H = 157.9136705 µH
In henries: 0.0001579136705 H
GATE tip
Magnetic circuits work like Ohm’s law: reluctance ℛ = l/(μ₀μᵣA), flux Φ = NI/ℛ and L = N²/ℛ. An air gap adds its own reluctance in series and usually dominates.

Frequently asked questions
Why does inductance go with N²?
Each turn adds flux (∝ N) and links all of it (another N). Doubling the turns quadruples L.
How accurate is the long-solenoid formula?
It assumes length much greater than diameter. Short coils have less inductance; Wheeler’s formula corrects for that.
