Convert between tesla, millitesla, microtesla, nanotesla, gauss, milligauss and kilogauss. The gauss is the CGS unit: 1 G = 10⁻⁴ T exactly, so 1 T = 10 000 G.

    Gauss, tesla and oersted

Gauss and tesla measure flux density B. Oersted and A/m measure field strength H. In air or vacuum 1 Oe corresponds to 1 G, which is why the two are often mixed up, but inside magnetic materials B and H differ by the permeability and must not be converted into each other.

    Magnetic Flux Density unit definitions

    tesla (T)
The tesla is the SI unit of magnetic flux density (B), equal to one weber per square metre. The Earth’s field is about 50 µT; a fridge magnet about 5 mT; an MRI scanner 1.5–3 T.
    gauss (G)
The gauss is the CGS unit of magnetic flux density, exactly 10⁻⁴ tesla, so 10 000 G = 1 T. It is still widely used for magnets and gaussmeters.
    millitesla (mT)
The millitesla is one thousandth of a tesla, equal to 10 gauss. It is a convenient unit for magnets, sensors and magnetic particle testing.
    microtesla (µT)
The microtesla is one millionth of a tesla, equal to 10 milligauss. The Earth’s magnetic field is roughly 25–65 µT depending on location.
    milligauss (mG)
The milligauss is one thousandth of a gauss, equal to 0.1 µT. EMF meters for household and power-line fields commonly read in milligauss.
    nanotesla (nT)
The nanotesla is one billionth of a tesla. In geophysics it is also called the gamma (γ).

    kilogauss (kG)
The kilogauss is one thousand gauss, exactly 0.1 tesla. Magnet grades often quote remanence (Br) in kilogauss.
