    Thermal Conductivity Converter

Thermal Conductivity Converter: convert between 7 thermal conductivity units, for example 1 BTU/(h·ft·°F) = 1.730734666 W/(m·K).

    From unit
    To unit

    1 BTU/(h·ft·°F) = 1.730734666 W/(m·K)

    Convert thermal conductivity between W/(m·K), mW/(m·K), W/(cm·K), BTU/(h·ft·°F), BTU·in/(h·ft²·°F), kcal/(h·m·°C) and cal/(s·cm·°C). All factors are exact: 1 BTU/(h·ft·°F) = 1.730734666 W/(m·K).

Two US units: per foot and per inch

BTU/(h·ft·°F) is used in heat transfer texts; BTU·in/(h·ft²·°F) is the insulation "k-value" (thickness in inches). They differ by a factor of 12: 1 BTU/(h·ft·°F) = 12 BTU·in/(h·ft²·°F).

    Conductivity, U-value and R-value

    Thermal conductivity k is a material property. A layer of thickness L has a thermal resistance R = L/k and transmittance U = k/L, which is a heat transfer coefficient in W/(m²·K).

    Thermal Conductivity unit definitions

    watt per metre kelvin (W/(m·K))
The watt per metre kelvin is the SI unit of thermal conductivity (k or λ): the heat flow through 1 m² of a 1 m thick layer for each kelvin of temperature difference. Copper is about 400 W/(m·K), mineral wool about 0.035.
BTU per hour foot degree Fahrenheit (BTU/(h·ft·°F))
The BTU per hour foot degree Fahrenheit is the US customary unit of thermal conductivity, exactly 1.730734666 W/(m·K). Carbon steel is about 26–30, copper about 230 BTU/(h·ft·°F).
BTU inch per hour square foot degree Fahrenheit (BTU·in/(h·ft²·°F))
The BTU inch per hour square foot degree Fahrenheit is the US "k-value" unit for insulation: the heat flow through one inch of material. 1 BTU·in/(h·ft²·°F) = 0.1442 W/(m·K); fibreglass is about 0.25–0.27.
    milliwatt per metre kelvin (mW/(m·K))
The milliwatt per metre kelvin is 0.001 W/(m·K). Insulation manufacturers use it for low conductivities: PIR boards about 22, mineral wool 32–40, still air about 26 mW/(m·K).
kilocalorie per hour metre degree Celsius (kcal/(h·m·°C))
The kilocalorie per hour metre degree Celsius is an older metric engineering unit, exactly 1.163 W/(m·K) with the International Table kilocalorie. It still appears in Asian, Russian and older European tables. Reference: International Table kilocalorie (4186.8 J), as used in engineering heat transfer data
    watt per centimetre kelvin (W/(cm·K))
The watt per centimetre kelvin is 100 W/(m·K). Physics and semiconductor references use it: silicon is about 1.5 W/(cm·K) and copper about 4 W/(cm·K).

calorie per second centimetre degree Celsius (cal/(s·cm·°C))
The calorie per second centimetre degree Celsius is the CGS unit of thermal conductivity, 418.4 W/(m·K) with the thermochemical calorie. Older chemistry and geology literature uses it. Reference: Thermochemical calorie (4.184 J)
