    Convert coefficients of thermal expansion between 1/K, 1/°C, 1/°F, ppm/K (µm/m·K) and ppm/°F (µin/in·°F). Only the size of the degree matters: 1/°C = 1/K, and 1/°F = 1.8/K exactly.

    Why no offset?

α is a change in length per degree of temperature change, so it converts with the interval ratio only (1 °F of change = 5/9 K). The 32 °F and 273.15 K offsets of temperature readings do not apply.

    Thermal Expansion Coefficient unit definitions

    per kelvin (K⁻¹)
The reciprocal kelvin (K⁻¹, 1/K) is the SI unit of the coefficient of thermal expansion α: the fractional change in length for each kelvin of temperature change. Carbon steel is about 12 × 10⁻⁶ K⁻¹.
    ppm per kelvin (ppm/K)
Parts per million per kelvin (ppm/K) is the convenient size for solids: 1 ppm/K = 10⁻⁶ K⁻¹ = 1 µm per metre per kelvin. Steel is about 12, aluminium 23 and fused silica about 0.5 ppm/K.
    per degree Celsius (°C⁻¹)
Per degree Celsius (1/°C) is numerically identical to per kelvin, because Celsius and kelvin degrees are the same size. Engineering handbooks often quote α in 1/°C.
    per degree Fahrenheit (°F⁻¹)
Per degree Fahrenheit (1/°F, also written in/in/°F) is the US customary unit of the expansion coefficient. Because a Fahrenheit degree is smaller, the number is 1/1.8 of the per-kelvin value: steel is about 6.5 × 10⁻⁶ /°F.
    ppm per degree Fahrenheit (ppm/°F)
Parts per million per degree Fahrenheit is the same as microinches per inch per °F (µin/in·°F), the form used in US datasheets. Divide a ppm/K value by 1.8 to get ppm/°F.
