- Specific collection area A/Q
- 25 s/m
- Penetration 1 − η
- 8.208499862 %
Step-by-step solution
- η = 1 − exp(−wA/Q) = 1 − exp(−0.1 × 5000 ÷ 200) = 91.79150014 %
Electrostatic Precipitator Formula
η = 1 − exp(−wA/Q)
w migration (drift) velocity, A collecting area, Q gas flow; A/Q specific collection area
Worked Example
An ESP with 5000 m² of plates treating 200 m³/s at a drift velocity of 0.1 m/s:
- η = 1 − exp(−wA/Q) = 1 − exp(−0.1 × 5000 ÷ 200) = 91.79150014 %
Penetration 1 − η: 8.208499862 %
GATE tip
For several fields in series, penetrations multiply: two fields of 90 % each give 1 − 0.1 × 0.1 = 99 %. The same holds for any devices in series.

Frequently asked questions
Why does efficiency rise so slowly near 100 %?
The exponential means each added area removes a fixed fraction of what is left: going from 99 % to 99.9 % needs 50 % more plate area.
What affects drift velocity?
Particle size, charge and the field strength, and especially dust resistivity: high-resistivity fly ash collects poorly without flue-gas conditioning.
