    Data Transfer Rate Converter

Data Transfer Rate Converter: convert between 11 data transfer rate units, for example 1 Mbps = 0.125 MB/s.

    From unit
    To unit

    1 Mbps = 0.125 MB/s

Convert internet and transfer speeds between bps, kbps, Mbps, Gbps and bytes per second (kB/s, MB/s, GB/s, MiB/s). Divide megabits per second by 8 to get megabytes per second: 100 Mbps = 12.5 MB/s.

Why downloads look slower than your plan

Plans are sold in megabits per second while browsers and game launchers show megabytes per second, a factor of 8. Protocol overhead (TCP/IP headers, Wi-Fi) takes another 5–10 %, so a 100 Mbps line typically downloads at 11–12 MB/s.

    Download time

    Time = file size ÷ speed in matching units. A 50 GB game on a 200 Mbps line: 50 GB × 8 = 400 Gbit; 400,000 Mbit ÷ 200 Mbps = 2000 s, about 33 minutes at full speed.

    Data Transfer Rate unit definitions

    megabit per second (Mbps)
A megabit per second is one million bits each second. Broadband, Wi-Fi and mobile speeds are advertised in Mbps; divide by 8 for megabytes per second.
    megabyte per second (MB/s)
A megabyte per second is one million bytes each second, equal to 8 Mbit/s. Download managers, Steam and drive benchmarks report MB/s.
    kilobit per second (kbps)
A kilobit per second is 1000 bit/s. Audio streams are rated in kbps: MP3 at 128–320 kbps, voice calls at about 64 kbps.
    gigabit per second (Gbps)
A gigabit per second is 10⁹ bit/s. Gigabit Ethernet and fibre broadband run at 1 Gbps; USB 3.2 and Thunderbolt at 10–40 Gbps.
    gigabyte per second (GB/s)
A gigabyte per second is 10⁹ bytes each second, 8 Gbit/s. NVMe SSDs read at 3.5–7 GB/s and memory bandwidth runs to tens of GB/s.
    bit per second (bps)
Bits per second (bit/s or bps) is the basic unit of data transfer rate. Serial links such as UART run at 9600 or 115,200 bit/s.

    byte per second (B/s)
Bytes per second measure how fast files move: one byte per second is eight bits per second.
    kilobyte per second (kB/s)
A kilobyte per second is 1000 bytes each second, 8 kbit/s. Browsers and download managers show slow transfers in kB/s.
    mebibyte per second (MiB/s)
A mebibyte per second is 1,048,576 bytes each second, about 8.39 Mbit/s. Many operating systems and tools show copy speeds in MiB/s labelled “MB/s”.
    terabit per second (Tbps)
A terabit per second is 10¹² bit/s, the scale of submarine cables, internet exchange points and large DDoS attacks.
    kibibyte per second (KiB/s)
A kibibyte per second is 1024 bytes each second. Linux tools such as wget and rsync report speeds in binary units.
