Convert file and storage sizes between bits, bytes, kB, MB, GB, TB and the binary units KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB. Decimal prefixes step by 1000 (1 GB = 1000 MB); binary prefixes step by 1024 (1 GiB = 1024 MiB).
Why a 1 TB drive shows 931 GB
Drive makers count in decimal units (1 TB = 10¹² bytes), while Windows counts in binary units (1 GiB = 2³⁰ bytes) but labels them GB. 10¹² ÷ 2³⁰ = 931.3, so nothing is missing: the same bytes are counted in a different unit. macOS and Linux disk tools use decimal GB and show 1000 GB.
Bits or bytes?
A lowercase b means bits and an uppercase B means bytes: 8 Mb (megabits) = 1 MB (megabyte). Storage is sold in bytes; network speeds are sold in bits per second.
Data Storage unit definitions
- byte (B)
- A byte is eight bits, enough to store one character of plain English text or a number from 0 to 255. File sizes and memory are counted in bytes.
- kilobyte (kB)
- A kilobyte is 1000 bytes in the decimal (SI) sense used by disk makers, macOS and network tools. Windows and some older texts use “KB” for 1024 bytes, which is properly a kibibyte (KiB).
- megabyte (MB)
- A megabyte is one million bytes (10⁶) in the decimal convention. A typical phone photo is 2–5 MB and a minute of MP3 music about 1 MB.
- gigabyte (GB)
- A gigabyte is one billion bytes (10⁹) as used by drive makers, phone storage and data plans. Windows reports sizes in gibibytes (2³⁰ bytes) but labels them “GB”, so a 256 GB drive shows as about 238 GB.
- terabyte (TB)
- A terabyte is 10¹² bytes, or 1000 gigabytes. Hard drives, SSDs and cloud storage plans are sold in terabytes.
- bit (bit)
- A bit (binary digit) holds one of two values, 0 or 1. It is the smallest unit of digital information; eight bits make one byte.

- megabit (Mbit)
- A megabit is one million bits, one eighth of a megabyte. Internet plans are sold in megabits per second, which is why a 100 Mbit/s line downloads about 12.5 MB each second.
- kibibyte (KiB)
- A kibibyte is 1024 bytes (2¹⁰), the binary unit the IEC introduced so that “kilo” could keep meaning exactly 1000. Memory pages and file-system blocks are counted in KiB.
- mebibyte (MiB)
- A mebibyte is 1,048,576 bytes (2²⁰), about 4.86 % more than a megabyte. Operating systems that count in powers of two often show MiB values labelled “MB”.
- gibibyte (GiB)
- A gibibyte is 2³⁰ = 1,073,741,824 bytes, about 7.37 % more than a gigabyte. RAM is built in binary sizes, so “16 GB” of memory is really 16 GiB.
- kilobit (kbit)
- A kilobit is 1000 bits. It appears mostly in telecommunications and in older memory-chip capacities.
- gigabit (Gbit)
- A gigabit is one billion bits, one eighth of a gigabyte. Memory chips (DRAM and flash dies) are specified in gigabits.
- petabyte (PB)
- A petabyte is 10¹⁵ bytes, a thousand terabytes. It measures data-centre storage, scientific data sets and company archives.
- tebibyte (TiB)
- A tebibyte is 2⁴⁰ bytes, about 9.95 % more than a terabyte. A “2 TB” drive holds about 1.82 TiB, which Windows shows as “1.81 TB”.
