Byte (B)
A byte is eight bits, enough to store one character of plain English text or a number from 0 to 255. File sizes and memory are counted in bytes.
Symbol: B
Quantity: amount of digital information
SI relation: 1 B = 8 bit (exact)
Derivation: 1 byte = 8 bits (an octet).
Exact: yes, by definition
Typical uses
- File and memory sizes
- Text encoding (one ASCII character = 1 byte)
- Storage capacity
