Discharge Converter (Cumecs, Cusecs, MLD)
Discharge Converter (Cumecs, Cusecs, MLD): convert between 8 water discharge units, for example 1 m³/s = 35.31466672 ft³/s.
| Unit | Value |
|---|---|
| cumec (m³/s) | 1 m³/s |
| cumec to cusec | 35.31466672 ft³/s |
| cumec to litre per second | 1000 L/s |
| cumec to cubic metre per day | 86400 m³/day |
| cumec to million litres per day | 86.4 MLD |
| cumec to million US gallons per day | 22.82446532 MGD |
| cumec to million imperial gallons per day | 19.00534305 MGD (imp) |
| cumec to acre-foot per day | 70.04561994 acre-ft/day |
Convert river, canal and water-supply discharge between cumecs (m³/s), cusecs (ft³/s), MLD, MGD, L/s, m³/day (KLD) and acre-feet per day. 1 cumec = 35.3147 cusecs, and 1 cusec flowing for a day is 2.4466 MLD.
Cusecs in Indian irrigation
Indian state irrigation departments and interstate tribunals still quote dam releases in cusecs, while CWC hydrology uses cumecs. A release of 10,000 cusecs for one day is 0.864 TMC (864 Mcft), handy when releases are tracked against a TMC award.
Water-supply units
MLD sizes treatment plants and city demand: at 135 litres per head per day (CPHEEO), one lakh people need 13.5 MLD. 1 MLD = 1000 m³/day = 11.574 L/s.
Water Discharge unit definitions
- cumec (m³/s)
- A cumec is one cubic metre per second, the SI unit of river, canal and flood discharge. The Ganga at Farakka carries about 10,000–60,000 cumecs in the monsoon.
- cusec (ft³/s)
- A cusec is one cubic foot per second. Indian irrigation departments and interstate water agreements still state canal and reservoir releases in cusecs; the US calls it cfs.
- million litres per day (MLD)
- Million litres per day (MLD) is the standard unit for water-supply and sewage-treatment capacity in India: a city of one million at 135 L per head needs 135 MLD.
- litre per second (L/s)
- Litres per second express small discharges: tube-well yields, drains, field channels and water-supply mains.
- cubic metre per day (m³/day)
- Cubic metres per day, the same as kilolitres per day (KLD), size sewage and water treatment plants and industrial effluent flows.
- million US gallons per day (MGD)
- Million US gallons per day (MGD) size water and wastewater plants in the United States; 1 MGD ≈ 3.785 MLD.

- million imperial gallons per day (MGD (imp))
- Million imperial gallons per day appear in older Indian, British and Gulf water-supply records; 1 MIGD ≈ 4.546 MLD.
- acre-foot per day (acre-ft/day)
- Acre-feet per day measure irrigation releases and reservoir inflows in the western US; one cusec flowing for a day is 1.983 acre-feet.
