| TMC to gigalitre | 28.31684659 GL |
Convert reservoir and water-resources volumes between TMC, MCM (million m³), BCM, Mcft, acre-feet, MAF, hectare-metres, megalitres and gigalitres. 1 TMC = 10⁹ ft³ = 28.316846592 MCM exactly.
Which unit, where
CWC reservoir bulletins use MCM (and BCM for totals); southern Indian states and the Cauvery and Krishna tribunals use TMC; city lake storage is often in Mcft; the US uses acre-feet, and Pakistan and the Indus treaty use MAF. Irrigation problems use hectare-metres and hectare-centimetres.
Volume from flow
A flow of 1 cumec for one day delivers 86,400 m³ = 0.0864 MCM; 1 cusec for one day is 86,400 ft³ = 1.983 acre-feet. 11,574 cusecs for one day make 1 TMC.
Water Volume unit definitions
- million cubic metres (MCM)
- A million cubic metres (MCM, also cubic hectometre hm³) is the standard unit of reservoir storage in India’s Central Water Commission bulletins: the Bhakra reservoir holds about 9,340 MCM gross.
- billion cubic metres (BCM)
- A billion cubic metres (BCM), equal to one cubic kilometre, measures river flows and national water resources: India’s utilisable surface water is about 690 BCM a year.
- TMC (TMC)
- TMC (thousand million cubic feet, i.e. 10⁹ ft³) is how Indian interstate water awards and dam capacities in the south are stated: Karnataka’s Cauvery release to Tamil Nadu is set in TMC, and 1 TMC = 28.317 MCM.
- acre-foot (acre-ft)
- An acre-foot is the volume of water covering one acre to a depth of one foot, 43,560 ft³ or about 1233 m³. US reservoirs and water rights are stated in acre-feet; Lake Mead holds about 26 million.
- cubic metre (m³)
- The cubic metre is the SI unit of volume: 1000 litres. Field and project volumes (ponds, tanks, earthwork, daily water use) are given in m³ before being scaled to MCM for reservoirs.
- million cubic feet (Mcft)
- Million cubic feet (Mcft) measure tank, lake and smaller reservoir storage in Indian city water-supply reports, such as Chennai’s lakes; 1000 Mcft = 1 TMC.

- million acre-feet (MAF)
- Million acre-feet (MAF) express river flows and treaty allocations: the Indus Waters Treaty and Pakistan’s water accounts use MAF, as does the Colorado River Compact.
- hectare-metre (ha·m)
- A hectare-metre is the water covering one hectare to a depth of one metre, 10,000 m³. Indian irrigation and watershed studies use ha·m and ha·cm for water requirements and storage.
- megalitre (ML)
- A megalitre is a million litres, 1000 m³ or roughly an Olympic swimming pool (2.5 ML). Australian water entitlements and storages are in ML and GL.
- cubic kilometre (km³)
- The cubic kilometre is used for global water stocks and very large lakes and rivers; it equals one BCM.
- gigalitre (GL)
- A gigalitre is a billion litres, exactly one million cubic metres; Australian dams and the Murray–Darling Basin plan use GL.
