Permeability Converter (Darcy, Millidarcy, m²)
Permeability Converter (Darcy, Millidarcy, m²): convert between 5 intrinsic permeability units, for example 1 D = 9.869233 × 10⁻¹³ m².
| Unit | Value |
|---|---|
| darcy to square metre | 9.869233 × 10⁻¹³ m² |
| darcy to square centimetre | 9.869233 × 10⁻⁹ cm² |
| darcy to square micrometre | 0.9869233 µm² |
| darcy (D) | 1 D |
| darcy to millidarcy | 1000 mD |
Convert intrinsic permeability between darcies, millidarcies, square metres, square micrometres and square centimetres. 1 darcy = 9.869233 × 10⁻¹³ m² ≈ 0.987 µm².
From darcy to hydraulic conductivity
K = k ρ g / μ. For water at 20 °C (ρ = 998.2 kg/m³, μ = 1.002 mPa·s), 1 darcy gives K ≈ 9.64 × 10⁻⁶ m/s ≈ 0.83 m/day. Oil, being more viscous, flows less readily through the same rock.
Intrinsic Permeability unit definitions
- square metre (m²)
- Intrinsic permeability is a property of the porous medium alone, independent of the fluid, and has the dimension of area. In SI it is in square metres: about 10⁻¹¹ m² for clean sand and 10⁻¹⁸ m² for clay.
- darcy (D)
- The darcy (D) is the traditional unit of intrinsic permeability, named after Henry Darcy: a medium of 1 D passes 1 cm³/s of a fluid of 1 cP viscosity through 1 cm² under a gradient of 1 atm per cm. It equals 9.869233 × 10⁻¹³ m².
- millidarcy (mD)
- The millidarcy is one thousandth of a darcy and the everyday unit for oil and gas reservoirs: tight gas is below 0.1 mD, good sandstone reservoirs 100–1000 mD.
- square micrometre (µm²)
- The square micrometre is the SI-friendly replacement for the darcy, since 1 D = 0.9869233 µm²: reservoir engineers outside the US increasingly quote permeability in µm² or mD.
- square centimetre (cm²)
- Square centimetres are the CGS unit of intrinsic permeability used in older soil-physics texts; 1 darcy ≈ 9.87 × 10⁻⁹ cm².
