Pascal (Pa)
The pascal (Pa) is the SI unit of pressure and stress, equal to one newton of force acting on one square metre.
Symbol: Pa
Quantity: pressure, stress and differential pressure (force per unit area)
SI relation: Pa is the coherent SI unit of pressure.
Derivation: 1 Pa = 1 N/m² = 1 kg·m⁻¹·s⁻²
Exact: yes, by definition
History
Named after the French physicist Blaise Pascal, the name was adopted for the newton per square metre by the 14th General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) in 1971.
Typical uses
- Cleanroom and isolator pressure differentials (typically 10–50 Pa)
- Filter and coil pressure drop in HVAC
- Building airtightness tests at 50 Pa
- Stress and strength of materials, usually as kPa, MPa or GPa
