Absorbed Radiation Dose Converter
Absorbed Radiation Dose Converter: convert between 7 absorbed dose units, for example 1 Gy = 100 rad.
| Unit | Value |
|---|---|
| gray (Gy) | 1 Gy |
| gray to milligray | 1000 mGy |
| gray to microgray | 1000000 µGy |
| gray to centigray | 100 cGy |
| gray to rad | 100 rad |
| gray to millirad | 100000 mrad |
| gray to kilogray | 0.001 kGy |
Convert absorbed radiation dose between grays (Gy, mGy, µGy, cGy, kGy) and rads (rad, mrad). 1 Gy = 100 rad exactly, and 1 cGy = 1 rad.
Gray versus sievert
Both are joules per kilogram, but the gray is the physical energy absorbed while the sievert weights it for the biological effect of the radiation type and tissue. For X-rays and gamma rays 1 Gy gives 1 Sv of equivalent dose; for alpha particles it gives 20 Sv.
Absorbed Dose unit definitions
- gray (Gy)
- The gray (Gy) is the SI unit of absorbed dose: one joule of radiation energy deposited per kilogram of matter. Radiotherapy delivers about 2 Gy per session.
- milligray (mGy)
- A milligray is one thousandth of a gray. Diagnostic imaging doses (CT dose index, mammography) are reported in mGy.
- rad (rad)
- The rad (radiation absorbed dose) is the older CGS unit: 100 ergs per gram, exactly 0.01 gray. It is still used in US practice.
- microgray (µGy)
- A microgray is one millionth of a gray: the scale of dental X-rays and air kerma from background radiation.
- centigray (cGy)
- A centigray is one hundredth of a gray, numerically equal to the old rad, which is why radiotherapy plans often use cGy.
- kilogray (kGy)
- A kilogray is 1000 grays, the scale of radiation sterilisation (25 kGy for medical devices) and food irradiation.

- millirad (mrad)
- A millirad is one thousandth of a rad, 10 micrograys.
