Convert radioactivity between becquerels (Bq, kBq, MBq, GBq, TBq), curies (Ci, mCi, µCi, nCi, pCi) and disintegrations per minute. 1 Ci = 3.7 × 10¹⁰ Bq exactly, so 1 mCi = 37 MBq.
Activity is not dose
Activity counts decays per second in the source; absorbed dose (Gy) and equivalent dose (Sv) measure the energy deposited in a body and its biological effect. A strong source far away can give a small dose.
Radon in pCi/L and Bq/m³
US radon levels are reported in picocuries per litre and European ones in becquerels per cubic metre: 1 pCi/L = 37 Bq/m³, so the US action level of 4 pCi/L is 148 Bq/m³.
Radioactivity unit definitions
- becquerel (Bq)
- The becquerel (Bq) is the SI unit of radioactivity: one nucleus decaying each second. A banana contains about 15 Bq of potassium-40; a human body about 8000 Bq.
- curie (Ci)
- The curie (Ci) is the traditional unit of radioactivity, defined as exactly 3.7 × 10¹⁰ becquerels, close to the activity of one gram of radium-226. It is still used in the United States.
- megabecquerel (MBq)
- A megabecquerel is one million decays per second, equal to 27.03 microcuries. Diagnostic nuclear-medicine doses are prescribed in MBq.
- millicurie (mCi)
- A millicurie is one thousandth of a curie, exactly 37 MBq. US nuclear-medicine doses are written in mCi.
- picocurie (pCi)
- A picocurie is 10⁻¹² curie, 0.037 becquerel. US radon levels are given in pCi/L, with an action level of 4 pCi/L (148 Bq/m³).
- kilobecquerel (kBq)
- A kilobecquerel is 1000 decays per second, equal to 27.03 nanocuries.

- gigabecquerel (GBq)
- A gigabecquerel is 10⁹ decays per second, about 27 millicuries. Therapy doses and industrial sources are in GBq.
- microcurie (µCi)
- A microcurie is one millionth of a curie, exactly 37 kBq: the scale of check sources and smoke detectors (about 1 µCi).
- disintegration per minute (dpm)
- Disintegrations per minute count decays per minute; 60 dpm is one becquerel and 2.22 dpm is one picocurie.
- terabecquerel (TBq)
- A terabecquerel is 10¹² decays per second, about 27 curies: the scale of radiotherapy and industrial gamma sources.
- nanocurie (nCi)
- A nanocurie is 10⁻⁹ curie, exactly 37 becquerels.
- rutherford (Rd)
- The rutherford (Rd) is an obsolete unit of one million decays per second, equal to 1 MBq.
