Luminance unit definitions
- nit (cd/m²)
- The candela per square metre, called the nit, is the SI unit of luminance: how bright a surface or screen looks. Laptop screens give 250–500 nits; HDR TVs 1000 nits and more.
- foot-lambert (fL)
- The foot-lambert (fL) is a US unit of luminance, (1/π) candela per square foot, about 3.426 nits. Cinema screens are specified at 14–16 fL (about 48 nits).
- apostilb (asb)
- The apostilb is (1/π) candela per square metre. Visual-field perimeters (Humphrey) use it for stimulus brightness, often expressed in decibels of attenuation.
- candela per square foot (cd/ft²)
- One candela per square foot is about 10.764 nits.
- candela per square inch (cd/in²)
- One candela per square inch is about 1550 nits, used for small bright sources such as lamps and indicators.
- stilb (sb)
- The stilb is the CGS unit of luminance, one candela per square centimetre (10,000 nits).
