    Denier (den)

The denier is the mass in grams of 9000 metres of filament or yarn. Like tex it is a direct count, so a finer filament has a lower denier; 9 denier = 1 tex.

    Symbol: den

Quantity: yarn count (linear density of yarns and fibres)

    SI relation: 1 den = 1.111111111111 × 10⁻⁷ kg/m (exact)

    Derivation: 1 den = 1 g per 9000 m = 1/9 tex ≈ 1.111 × 10⁻⁷ kg/m (exact)

    Exact: yes, by definition

    History

The denier comes from the historic silk trade and is still the common unit for silk, nylon and polyester filaments, especially in the United States and Asia.

    Typical uses

    • Hosiery and tights (for example 15–40 den)
    • Nylon and polyester filament yarns
    • Bag and luggage fabrics (210D, 420D, 840D)
