Convert between tex, decitex, kilotex, denier, English cotton count (Ne), metric count (Nm), worsted, woollen and linen counts. Direct systems (tex, denier) give mass per length, so a coarser yarn has a higher number; indirect systems (Ne, Nm) give length per mass, so a coarser yarn has a lower number.

    Direct and indirect yarn counts

Tex is grams per 1000 m and denier is grams per 9000 m, so tex = denier ÷ 9. Indirect counts are reciprocal: Nm is kilometres per kilogram, so tex = 1000 ÷ Nm, and Ne is 840-yard hanks per pound, so tex = 590.5412 ÷ Ne. Converting between a direct and an indirect count is a division, not a multiplication.

    Exact constants

The hank lengths (840 yd cotton, 560 yd worsted, 256 yd woollen, 300 yd linen lea) and the pound (0.45359237 kg) are exact, so every factor here is exact; constants such as 590.5 for Ne are rounded forms of the exact value.

    Yarn Count unit definitions

    tex (tex)
The tex is the mass in grams of 1000 metres of fibre or yarn. It is a direct count: a heavier, coarser yarn has a higher tex. ISO 1144 makes it the universal system for textile linear density.
    denier (den)
The denier is the mass in grams of 9000 metres of filament or yarn. Like tex it is a direct count, so a finer filament has a lower denier; 9 denier = 1 tex.
    English cotton count (Ne)
The English cotton count (Ne) is the number of 840-yard hanks in one pound of yarn. It is an indirect count: a finer yarn has a higher count, so 40s cotton is finer than 20s.
    decitex (dtex)
The decitex is the mass in grams of 10 000 metres of filament or fibre, one tenth of a tex. It is close to the denier (1 dtex = 0.9 den) and is the usual metric unit for filament yarns and fibres.
    metric count (Nm)
The metric count (Nm) is the number of kilometres of yarn in one kilogram, equivalently metres per gram. It is an indirect count: Nm 68 is finer than Nm 34, and tex = 1000 ÷ Nm.
    worsted count (Nw)
The worsted count is the number of 560-yard hanks in one pound of yarn. It is an indirect count used for worsted (combed wool) and acrylic yarns; it is 1.5 times the cotton count for the same yarn.

    kilotex (ktex)
The kilotex is the mass in grams of one metre of material, 1000 tex. It is used for heavy strands such as slivers, rovings and tows.
    Yorkshire woollen count (NY)
The Yorkshire woollen count is the number of 256-yard skeins in one pound of yarn. It is an indirect count for woollen-spun (carded) wool yarns.
    linen lea (NeL)
The linen lea count is the number of 300-yard leas in one pound of yarn. It is an indirect count for linen (flax), hemp and ramie yarns.
    kilogram per metre (kg/m)
The kilogram per metre is the SI unit of linear density, the mass of a fibre, yarn, wire or cable per unit length. Textiles use the much smaller tex (10⁻⁶ kg/m).
