Metric Count (Nm)
The metric count (Nm) is the number of kilometres of yarn in one kilogram, equivalently metres per gram. It is an indirect count: Nm 68 is finer than Nm 34, and tex = 1000 ÷ Nm.
Symbol: Nm
Quantity: yarn count (linear density of yarns and fibres)
SI relation: Nm = kilometres of yarn per kilogram, so tex = 1000 ÷ Nm
Derivation: Nm = kilometres of yarn per kilogram, so tex = 1000 ÷ Nm
Exact: yes, by definition
Typical uses
- Wool, linen and spun yarns in continental Europe
- Worsted and blended yarn trade
- Two-ply notation such as Nm 2/60
