How to Convert Tex to Metric Count
- Nm = 1000 ÷ tex
- tex = 1000 ÷ Nm
- Example: convert 25 tex to Nm: 1000 ÷ 25 = 40 Nm
Formula
Nm = 1000 ÷ tex
Derivation from SI units:
- 1 tex = 1 g per 1000 m = 10⁻⁶ kg/m (exact)
- Nm = kilometres of yarn per kilogram, so tex = 1000 ÷ Nm
- Solving for Nm: Nm = 1000 ÷ tex (a higher tex means a lower Nm)
Both units are defined exactly, so the factor is exact. Tex definition: tex; Metric Count definition: metric count.
Worked examples
- A 25 tex yarn is 40 Nm.
1000 ÷ 25 = 40 Nm - A 50 tex yarn is 20 Nm.
1000 ÷ 50 = 20 Nm

Frequently asked questions
Why is tex × Nm always 1000?
Tex is grams per kilometre and Nm is kilometres per kilogram, so they are reciprocals scaled by 1000: tex × Nm = 1000.
What is the formula for tex to metric count?
Nm = 1000 ÷ tex. The two systems are inversely related, so divide the constant by the value; do not multiply. For example, 1000 ÷ 25 = 40 Nm.
Why does a higher tex give a lower Nm?
Metric Count counts length per unit mass (an indirect system), while tex counts mass per unit length (a direct system). A finer yarn has a higher indirect number and a lower direct number.
Is the tex to Nm conversion exact?
Yes. Both units are defined exactly, and 1 tex is exactly 1000 Nm.
