Tex
The tex is the mass in grams of 1000 metres of fibre or yarn. It is a direct count: a heavier, coarser yarn has a higher tex. ISO 1144 makes it the universal system for textile linear density.
Symbol: tex
Quantity: yarn count (linear density of yarns and fibres)
SI relation: 1 tex = 0.000001 kg/m (exact)
Derivation: 1 tex = 1 g per 1000 m = 10⁻⁶ kg/m (exact)
Exact: yes, by definition
History
The tex system was adopted internationally to replace the many traditional count systems (cotton, worsted, woollen, linen) with one decimal metric system.
Typical uses
- Yarn specifications in metric countries
- Technical textiles and industrial yarns
- Converting between cotton count, denier and metric count
