How to Convert Decitex to Worsted Count
- Nw = 8858.118712 ÷ dtex
- dtex = 8858.118712 ÷ Nw
- Example: convert 15 dtex to Nw: 8858.118712 ÷ 15 = 590.5412474 Nw
Formula
Nw = 8858.118711724 ÷ dtex
Derivation from SI units:
- 1 dtex = 1 g per 10 000 m = 0.1 tex = 10⁻⁷ kg/m (exact)
- Nw = number of 560-yard hanks per pound, so tex = 885.8119 ÷ Nw
- Solving for Nw: Nw = 8858.118711724 ÷ dtex (a higher dtex means a lower Nw)
Both units are defined exactly, so the factor is exact. Decitex definition: decitex; Worsted Count definition: worsted count.
Worked examples
- A reading of 56 dtex converts to 158.1806913 Nw.
8858.118712 ÷ 56 = 158.1806913 Nw - A value of 235 dtex is 37.69412218 Nw.
8858.118712 ÷ 235 = 37.69412218 Nw

Where it's used
Decitex are used for polyester and nylon filament yarns (for example 167 dtex), while worsted count appear in worsted wool and acrylic yarns. Both measure yarn count (linear density of yarns and fibres), but one system is the inverse of the other, so a fixed constant is divided by the value.

Frequently asked questions
What is the formula for decitex to worsted count?
Nw = 8858.118712 ÷ dtex. The two systems are inversely related, so divide the constant by the value; do not multiply. For example, 8858.118712 ÷ 15 = 590.5412474 Nw.
Why does a higher dtex give a lower Nw?
Worsted Count counts length per unit mass (an indirect system), while decitex counts mass per unit length (a direct system). A finer yarn has a higher indirect number and a lower direct number.
Is the dtex to Nw conversion exact?
Yes. Both units are defined exactly, so the ratio is exact; its decimal form does not terminate and is shown here to 10 significant figures (more with the precision selector).
