How to Convert Decitex to English Cotton Count
- Ne = 5905.412474 ÷ dtex
- dtex = 5905.412474 ÷ Ne
- Example: convert 15 dtex to Ne: 5905.412474 ÷ 15 = 393.694165 Ne
Formula
Ne = 5905.412474482 ÷ dtex
Derivation from SI units:
- 1 dtex = 1 g per 10 000 m = 0.1 tex = 10⁻⁷ kg/m (exact)
- Ne = number of 840-yard hanks per pound, so tex = 0.45359237 kg ÷ (840 × 0.9144 m) × 10⁶ ÷ Ne = 590.5412 ÷ Ne
- Solving for Ne: Ne = 5905.412474482 ÷ dtex (a higher dtex means a lower Ne)
Both units are defined exactly, so the factor is exact. Decitex definition: decitex; English Cotton Count definition: English cotton count.
Worked examples
- A reading of 56 dtex converts to 105.4537942 Ne.
5905.412474 ÷ 56 = 105.4537942 Ne - A value of 235 dtex is 25.12941479 Ne.
5905.412474 ÷ 235 = 25.12941479 Ne

Where it's used
Decitex are used for polyester and nylon filament yarns (for example 167 dtex), while English cotton count appear in cotton and blended spun yarns (20s, 30s, 40s). Both measure yarn count (linear density of yarns and fibres), but one system is the inverse of the other, so a fixed constant is divided by the value.

Frequently asked questions
What is the formula for decitex to English cotton count?
Ne = 5905.412474 ÷ dtex. The two systems are inversely related, so divide the constant by the value; do not multiply. For example, 5905.412474 ÷ 15 = 393.694165 Ne.
Why does a higher dtex give a lower Ne?
English Cotton Count counts length per unit mass (an indirect system), while decitex counts mass per unit length (a direct system). A finer yarn has a higher indirect number and a lower direct number.
Is the dtex to Ne conversion exact?
Yes. Both units are defined exactly, so the ratio is exact; its decimal form does not terminate and is shown here to 10 significant figures (more with the precision selector).
