Convert fuel economy between US mpg, UK mpg, L/100 km and km/L. L/100 km measures fuel used per distance, so it is reciprocal to mpg: L/100 km = 235.215 ÷ US mpg = 282.481 ÷ UK mpg.
US mpg, UK mpg and L/100 km
The US (3.785 L) and imperial (4.546 L) gallons differ by about 20 %, so the same car shows a higher mpg in the UK. Canada, Australia and Europe rate cars in L/100 km, where a lower number is better; India and Japan use km/L.
Fuel Economy unit definitions
- liter per 100 kilometers (L/100 km)
- Litres per 100 kilometres measures fuel consumed, so lower is better. It is the official unit in Canada, Australia, the EU and most of Europe; a typical car uses 6–9 L/100 km.
- mile per US gallon (mpg)
- Miles per US gallon is the fuel economy unit on US window stickers. Because the US gallon is smaller than the imperial gallon, a US mpg figure is about 17% lower than the UK figure for the same car.
- kilometer per liter (km/L)
- Kilometres per litre is the fuel economy unit in India, Japan and much of Latin America. Higher is better: 20 km/L is a frugal small car.
- mile per imperial gallon (mpg (UK))
- Miles per imperial gallon is how fuel economy is quoted in the UK. The imperial gallon is 4.54609 L, about 1.2 US gallons, so UK mpg numbers are higher than US ones for the same car.
