    Convert specific enthalpy, latent heat and calorific value between kJ/kg, J/kg, MJ/kg, J/g, BTU/lb, kcal/kg, cal/g and kWh/kg. 1 BTU/lb = 2.326 kJ/kg and 1 kcal/kg = 4.1868 kJ/kg exactly.

    Calorific values

    Indian coal is graded by gross calorific value in kcal/kg, from G1 (above 7000 kcal/kg) down to G17; fuels internationally are rated in MJ/kg. 6000 kcal/kg = 25.1 MJ/kg = 10,800 BTU/lb.

    Latent heats of water

    Fusion 334 kJ/kg (80 cal/g, 144 BTU/lb); vaporisation at 100 °C 2257 kJ/kg (539 cal/g, 970 BTU/lb).

    Specific Energy unit definitions

    kilojoule per kilogram (kJ/kg)
Kilojoules per kilogram are the unit of steam-table enthalpy and latent heat: the latent heat of vaporisation of water at 100 °C is 2257 kJ/kg and of fusion of ice 334 kJ/kg.
    megajoule per kilogram (MJ/kg)
Megajoules per kilogram express the heating (calorific) value of fuels: diesel about 45 MJ/kg, coal 20–30 MJ/kg, biomass 15–19 MJ/kg and hydrogen 120 MJ/kg (lower heating values).
    BTU per pound (BTU/lb)
BTU per pound is the US unit of specific enthalpy and heating value, exactly 2.326 kJ/kg: water’s latent heat of vaporisation is 970 BTU/lb and diesel about 19,000 BTU/lb.
    kilocalorie per kilogram (kcal/kg)
Kilocalories per kilogram are how Indian coal grades (GCV bands) and older boiler texts state heating values: G-grade coal is 4300–4600 kcal/kg, and 1 kcal/kg = 4.1868 kJ/kg. Reference: International Table calorie (4.1868 J).
    joule per kilogram (J/kg)
The joule per kilogram is the SI unit of specific energy: enthalpy, latent heat and heating value per unit mass. It is dimensionally m²/s², the same as a velocity squared.
    calorie per gram (cal/g)
Calories per gram give latent heats (water: 80 cal/g to melt, 540 cal/g to boil) and fuel values in CGS units. Reference: International Table calorie (4.1868 J).

    kilowatt-hour per kilogram (kWh/kg)
Kilowatt-hours per kilogram describe battery and fuel energy density and the energy needed per kilogram of product: Li-ion cells hold about 0.25 kWh/kg and hydrogen 33.3 kWh/kg (LHV).
    joule per gram (J/g)
Joules per gram are used in calorimetry and DSC results (enthalpy of melting, crystallinity); the number equals kJ/kg.
